This charming town of the Old West was not even on our radar!
We needed a place to RV camp while visiting Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Park and while every place seemed either packed or closed for the season in nearby towns, Dubois was waiting for us with open arms!
“Dubois — say it like “cowboys.” It’s one of the last real old West towns — a charming hidden gem with the authentic feel of the Frontier. Expedia calls Dubois the best place for an escape in Wyoming.” – Destination Dubois In our experience, we found all of this, and more, to be true!
The small downtown was rustic and charming and we found the people to be extremely warm and welcoming. We stayed there for 6 days, two of those days we spent them visiting Yellowstone & Grand Teton, 2 days doing laundry, working and recovering from our hikes, ha! Which left us with only 2 remaining (and rainy!) days to walk around downtown. Unfortunately, we did not get to explore all the beautiful hikes, bike trails and beautiful nature that is a big part of Dubois, other than from the comfort of our truck :). The weather was shifting quickly from nice fall weather the first few days to cold and rainy during the last half of our stay. I have to say that beauty was everywhere we drove, from the badlands on one side to beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, the fall foliage and the famous big horn sheep! Bring binoculars! We saw many as we drove by.
Well, this time around we were on a tight traveling schedule, which just means we will have to go back and explore more next time! Stay tuned to watch our Dubois, Yellowstone & Tetons episode coming soon to our Youtube Channel. We will feature more of the quaint charm of the town then.
Here’s a list of the places we enjoyed while staying in Dubois:
- We found RV Park Solitude, a scenic private property located in 60 acres of badlands. This RV park was perfect for our stay. We gazed in awe at the most gorgeous starry skies and woke up to incredible views, our children had a blast roaming around the little hills and “hiking” their nearby trails. This place was peaceful and it gave us the feel of camping in the middle of nowhere, something our family had not experienced before, yet we had full hookups, great water, wifi and we were so close to downtown! Eric, the property manager was incredibly helpful as well. We’d go back in a heart beat.

- If you are looking for the best coffee in town, check out The Perch Coffeehouse. Great drinks, baked goods and breakfast burritos match their inviting and cozy atmosphere. Wifi and plenty of space there allow for some good hours of work and homeschooling in our case.
- The Honey House is where we found all the sweetness not only in their exquisite honey products but in their customer service. This family owned business makes you feel right at home. The owners took the time to show us pictures of their hives, let us taste some goods and answered all the buzzing bee questions our children had. Their solid honey was my favorite and I also walked out with the best lip balm ever!
- Cowboy Cafe served us a delicious brunch and the freshest home made style pies! Great service. Friendly staff. Excellent food, good prices.
- There’s few things the boys and I love more than finding a good local bookstore when we visit small towns, and Water Wheel Gifts & Books was THE place to visit for us. Husband and wife owners were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. The husband took the time to answer my kids’ questions about Pecos Bill & Shakespeare plays. ha! Great little place!
- If you are in shopping mode, we recommend you visit these two fun shops: Kenley & Case Boutique and Provisions. Both of them are family owned by two lovely couples. We had fun chatting with them and hearing a bit about their stories. We also took advantage to do some Christmas shopping there :).
All in all, we had a great experience staying in Dubois. This small town of the Old West captured us with its rustic and quirky charm, friendly neighbors and beautiful surrounding nature. We’ll be back, Dubois!
